Vans gives you a strip of angle aluminum with notches in it to indicate where to make the cut outs. Afterwards, you debur the stiffeners on the Scotchbrite wheel to make them nice and smooth. Here are my snips (L,R, Straight) and some stiffeners before the deburring.
